Inside, open-plan living flows from a fully equipped kitchen through to a cosy lounge, with a playful mezzanine loft above and a king-size bed for a deep night's sleep. Stargazing guide
Set within the Cairngorms National Park and screened from Aviemore's lights by the surrounding forest, Rothie Cabins offers wonderfully dark skies right from the deck. On a clear night, light the firepit, pour a dram, and watch the stars appear. For the best view, give your eyes 20 to 30 minutes to adjust away from bright light, and use a red torch rather than white to preserve your night vision. A clear, moonless night offers the best chance of seeing the Milky Way arch over the pines, with autumn and winter bringing the longest, darkest nights of the year. This far north, the aurora is occasionally visible on the northern horizon when solar activity is high, so it's always worth a glance that way. And for a truly unforgettable stargazing trip, the nearby Tomintoul and Glenlivet – Cairngorms Dark Sky Park, the darkest in the UK, is well worth an evening's drive with binoculars or a telescope.
